Hello Betamax, A year ago, our newsroom asked a simple question: How can we cover AI better? The answer wasn't to publish more AI stories. It was to dig deeper. While Southeast Asia may not be building the world's most advanced AI models, its 600 million people will still live with the consequences of this technology. That makes rigorous, thoughtful AI coverage more important than ever. Over the past year, we've focused on understanding not just what AI can do, but who benefits, who gets left behind, and how it's changing businesses and societies across Southeast Asia and the wider region. For a long time, Tech in Asia has been associated with startup funding news. AI coverage requires more scrutiny. We don't just report what companies say or repeat technical claims because they sound impressive. Instead, we put those claims in context and test them against reality. That means looking beyond demos, benchmarks, and valuations. Who is actually making money from AI? Where is the technology creating real value? And where does the hype run ahead of reality? Though there's still more to be done, I'm glad to say we have delivered some of the best AI coverage in the region. To name a few:
If you find this coverage valuable, consider supporting our work by subscribing to Tech in Asia. We also publish a weekly AI newsletter featuring original insights, interviews with AI founders, investors, researchers, and operators, as well as conversations with executives about how AI is being deployed within their organizations. If you have feedback, suggestions, or stories we should be paying attention to, write to us at editors@techinasia.com. Thu Huong Le, managing editor |
